2013 Young Artists Competition:
Rules and Winners' Obligations
- The competition is open to musicians born after December 31, 1988. Previous FIRST PLACE winners may not reapply.
- The competition consists of two rounds: a recorded round and a live competition of up to 12 finalists selected from Round 1.
- The recorded piece, which needs to include all movements, must be at least 15 minutes in duration and must be one for which orchestral parts are generally available. The Round 2 piece need not be the same as the recorded piece but must meet the same requirements. (See Round 1 and Round 2 pages for more details.)
- Memorization of the entire piece is required for the live competition and concert.
- Finalists for the live competition are responsible for their own travel expenses. Local host families will offer free lodging and meals if requested. Contact the chair for details. (iyac@jeffsymphony.org)
- Award Recipients (First, Second and Third Place) — with accompanists — are required to perform their piece at a public recital on the evening of the live competition.
- The First Place Winner will perform a 30-minute recital (pianist's choice of music) for a fund-raiser on Saturday, February 16, 2013.
- The First Place Winner will appear as soloist with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra on February 17, 2013. In addition:
- The First Place Winner must play in concert the same piece used
to win the competition in Round 2.
- The First Place Winner is required to attend the Wednesday orchestra rehearsal and the Saturday dress rehearsal in the week prior to the February concert performance.
- Travel costs are the responsibility of the award winner.
- Entry in the competition constitutes the entrant’s authorization to use his or her name, photograph and biographical information for publicity purposes. Recording of the concert performance becomes the property of the Jefferson Symphony.
