- The competition is open to musicians born after December 31, 1984. Previous FIRST PLACE winners may not reapply.
- The competition consists of two rounds: a recorded round and a live competition of 12 finalists selected from round one.
- The recorded piece must be at least 15 minutes in duration and be one for which orchestral parts are generally available. The round two piece need not be the same as the recorded piece but must meet the same requirements.
- Memorization of the entire piece is required for the live competition and concert.
- Finalists for the live competition are responsible for their own travel expenses. Gratis accommodations are available with members of the local community upon request. Contact the chair for details.

- Award Recipients (First, Second and Third Place) – with accompanists – are required to perform at least one movement of their piece at a public recital on the evening of the live competition.
- The First Place Winner will perform a 30-minute solo recital (musician’s choice) for a black-tie fund-raiser, Saturday evening, March 21, 2009.
- The First Place Winner will appear as soloist with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra on March 22, 2009. In addition:
a) The First Place Winner must play the same piece used to win the competition in Round Two.
b) The First Place Winner is required to attend one orchestra rehearsal and the dress rehearsal in the week prior to the March concert performance.
c) Travel costs are the responsibility of the award winner.
- Entry in this competition constitutes the entrant’s authorization to use his or her name, photograph and biographical information for publicity purposes. Recording of the concert performance becomes the property of the Jefferson Symphony.
