Jefferson Symphony Announces 2010 Young Artists Competition Winners

Golden—The Jefferson Symphony proudly announces the winners of its 2010 Young Artists Competition, the final round of which took place on January 9 at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, competition co-sponsor. Eleven instrumental finalists who had been chosen in October based on their submitted recordings competed live that day. Winners performed in a recital that evening.

Brandon GarbotFirst-place winner is the youngest finalist, 16-year-old Brandon Garbot, a sophomore at Southridge High School (Portland, Oregon). He performed Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Last year’s competition winner, 16-year-old Eloise Kim, is a friend and encouraged him to apply.

Second place winner Ian Buckspan, 22, performed Clarinet Concerto No. 2 by Malcolm Arnold. A local talent, Buckspan graduated from Niwot High School in 2005 and the University of Colorado (CU) in 2009.

2010 WinnersThird place winner Hans Kristian Goldstein, 21, who attends the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, performed 1Antonin Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor.

The judges awarded Honorable Mention to Rosalie Gilbert, who is currently working on a Master of Music degree at the CU. She performed the Harp Concerto Op. 25 by Alberto Ginastera.

Judging the final round on Saturday were flutist Nancy Andrew, who teaches at Metropolitan State College and CU-Boulder; Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO) violinist Erik Peterson; and CSO assistant principal cellist and Lakewood Symphony Orchestra conductor Matthew Switzer.

The first-place winner receives $2,000 cash, a five-year annuity of $1,000 per year starting in 2011, and a performance as soloist live in concert March 28, 2010, with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra. Second- and third-place winners receive $1,500 and $1,000 cash, respectively.

Jefferson Symphony Young Artists Committee organizes the annual event to celebrate the talents of outstanding young musicians.

The recorded round of the competition was adjudicated last October by area musicians Katherine Thayer, concert master, Evergreen Chamber Orchestra and Denver Philharmonic; Jim Todd, cello, Arapahoe Philharmonic; and Catherine Peterson, flute, Colorado Symphony Orchestra.

First-place winner Brandon Garbot will perform with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra at its March 28, 2010, concert in Golden. The 90-member volunteer orchestra, whose winter home is in Bunker Auditorium, Green Center, on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden, was founded in 1953
