The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra (JSO) will be presenting “Fantastique”, a special Mother’s Day Concert on May 9, including a special performance of the Golden Overture.
Guest artist, Rodney Farrar, cellist will be joining the 90-member orchestra. Mr. Farrar is a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan and is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He was a member of the Rochester (NY) Philharmonic Orchestra before taking a position as cello instructor at the University of Kentucky where he taught for many years.
Mr. Farrar has a special love for teaching children. He was involved in developing the Suzuki Method of cello teaching from its beginning in this country. This is a teaching style which attempts to minimize judgment and bring the pure joy of musical expression to the student.
JSO will be performing retired Associate Conductor David Ackerman’s Golden Overture which he wrote commemorating Golden’s 150th birthday. The score was presented to the Golden City Council on October 22, 2009. At the February 21st concert this year, Jacob Smith, Mayor of the City of Golden proclaimed, “Golden’s sincere gratitude to Dr. David Ackerman, Dr. William Morse, and Chair Dennis Orr, and the entire Jefferson Symphony Orchestra for your contribution to Golden’s 150th anniversary celebration and your continued musical regalement of the Golden Community”.
In addition to the Golden Overture, JSO will be performing Concerto No. 1 for Violoncello and Orchestra by Shostakovich and Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz.
The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra delivers professional performances in a community orchestra environment. Under the direction of Dr. William Morse, Music Director and Principal Conductor, JSO produces five season concerts at the Green Center, Colorado School of Mines, and summer family concerts in local parks. The Symphony is supported in part by the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD).
Fantastique is Sunday, May 9, at the Green Center, CSM campus, 924 16th St., Golden at 3:00.
