Hilary Abigana
Flutist

Flutist Hilary Abigana, 23, of Woodland, CA, received her Bachelor of Music degree with Distinction in 2006 from The Eastman School of Music, where she was also awarded the Performer’s Certificate in flute. She won the 2003 Eastman Neilson Flute Concerto Competition, performing with the Eastman Philharmonia Chamber Orchestra in a gala concert honoring Professor Emeritus Joseph Mariano. She has also performed on NPR’s “From the Top” and was a finalist at the Albuquerque Flute Association’s Frank Bowen Young Artist Competition. Ms. Abigana is currently on full scholarship at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Studying with Leone Buyse, she is pursuing her Master of Music degree. Together with previous teachers Bonita Boyd and Timothy Day, these three musicians have been the greatest influence on her playing. Ms. Abigana, an advocate for the advancement of contemporary music and the promotion of the living composer, has performed with several new music groups and has commissioned and premiered works by her brother, Brett Keüper Abigaña. She was also a founding member of the Destino Winds, a woodwind quintet formed at Eastman in 2002 which won numerous awards and fellowships. In 2004, Ms. Abigana attended the Yale at Norfolk Chamber Music Festival on fellowship and also studied solo and chamber music at the Sarasota Music Festival with Thomas Robertello, Leone Buyse and Carol Wincenc. An avid orchestral musician, Ms. Abigana has performed under well-known conductors with the National Repertory Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival and the Brevard Music Center. On January 12th, she performed the Concerto for Flute in a minor by Carol Philipp Emanuel Bach.
